Veterans Honor Challenge 2024

Since May 4th’s EP VA Inaugural Chess Tourney, we’ve organized five lichess tournaments including our latest and sixth chess challenge, the Veterans Honor Chess Challenge 2024. This weekend’s event brought together 15 chess enthusiast of all ages to compete on the 64 squares of strategy in honor of Veterans Day and the memory of Clinton F. Cross, a member of our chess community and club whose username on lichess is Ccross39. There are many stories VA members and members of the chess community have of Mr. Cross that we hope to share someday. Especially from Mr. Griffin who credits much of his activity on the chess boards to his friend from the VA.

In this weekend’s chess tournament, anthonydetroit867 held on strong to 1st place with Alleluia2 at 2nd and Canyon Hills Middle School’s own King-Law at 3rd! All members scored 20 points respectfully and were joined by a dozen other chess enthusiast who did their best to reach for the podium. Congrats to our members, we’ll have a nice medal to recognize your accomplishment for this tournament which was hosted for several very special reasons in honor of our community’s Veterans. Shout out also to the VA for hosting this month’s first Veterans Chess Day. We look forward to more opportunities to connect in person, especially with our online minds that have been carrying the club forward throughout the year. We will host our next lichess challenge on November 30th for our Winter Chess Open. Check in with Mr. Griffin to join, email anthonydetroit867@gmail.com. Happy Veterans Day everyone! Standings from the Veterans Honor Chess Challenge are included below along with flier with featured members of the El Paso VA Chess Club on lichess.

How Brownsville Became the Chess Capital of Texas + Watching Endgame

A film I like to watch to think on the chess community in the Rio Grande Valley. While I know movies don’t always do the true story justice, I do enjoy the intention of the film and actors. It’s a film many of our secondary students have enjoyed and one that is now available online on YouTube. Prior I had to purchase the DVD to watch the film. The link to the film is available below. Also shared below is an article that was published this year titled ‘How Brownsville Became the Chess Capital of Texas’ by Sarah Thurmond. It includes a look at the history of chess in Brownsville during the 90s and after, the story of teacher and chess educator Jose J. Guajardo, and many interesting connections to chess beyond secondary school. There’s a lot of really cool activity in Brownsville as chess players continue to excel and reach new achievements. The community is also preparing to extend their designation as the Chess Capital of Texas.
